Opportunistic Sensing for Smart Heating Control in Private Households

چکیده
This position paper provides qualitative considerations on the design and implementation of a smart heating control system for private households. We envision the system to rely on the opportunistic exploitation of information made available by existing smart devices. Since heating represents the major source of energy consumption in domestic environments, significant energy savings may be achieved. The system will opportunistically leverage smart devices, such as smart electricity meters and mobile phones, to estimate occupants’ activity patterns and thus optimize the heating control strategy. By avoiding the need for installing customized sensing devices in the home, our solution may significantly lower the adoption barrier of smart heating solutions.

Occupancy Sensing and Prediction for Automated Energy Savings
The ability to sense and predict occupancy – i.e. to establish when the residents are and will be in a building – represents a basic requirement for the energy-efficient operation of many building automation systems. In residential households, in particular, the absence of all residents allows a heating controller to automatically lower the temperature of the home, thereby saving energy that wo...

This paper presents a new privacy-preserving smart metering system. Our scheme is private under the differential privacy model and therefore provides strong and provable guarantees. With our scheme, an (electricity) supplier can periodically collect data from smart meters and derive aggregated statistics without learning anything about the activities of individual households. For example, a sup...

متن کاملIntelligent Heating Systems in Households for Smart Grid Applications
To realize smart grids, there is a need for flexible supply and demand of electricity. Conventional heating systems in the Netherlands are based on gas, but new innovative systems, such as heat pumps and micro-CHPs, consume or produce electricity. If the demand for heat and the production/consumption of electricity is decoupled by using a hot water buffer, these heating systems provide the flex...
